World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10th and is celebrated as an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. This year the theme is psychological first aid, which is a type of support people can provide for those in distress. This was set by the World Federation for Mental Health, as it is every year.
Part of this holiday is just ending the negatively associated feelings and/or stereotypes of mental health. However, this year has been set aside to educate the public on psychological first aid. According to the World Federation for Mental Health, psychological first aid “will enable us to contribute to the goal of taking mental health out of the shadows so that people in general feel more confident in tackling the stigma.” Their key messages are to explain common mistakes in health care responses, provide psychological first aid orientation, and explain that psychological first aid is feasible and appropriate to learn for everyone.

"To those who have never struggled with mental illness- you don't have to understand it. You don't have to fix it. What you have to do is be kind, be compassionate, and be listening. To those who are struggling- it is not forever. It feels like forever. It lies."
