Where would we be without Google? It places virtually all information right at your finger tips. Do you need a recipe for muffins? Google it! Curious about why cats purr? Google it! Looking for a chiropractor? Google it! The search engine has become an integral part of daily life, with their company no longer restricted to gathering information from the web. It is our e-mail, it is our GPS, it is our television with Youtube, and it is so much more. However, in order to enjoy all of Google’s services, we have given the corporation access to intimate details about ourselves. And Google keeps all that data.
Google Maps is a useful tool for getting directions that has been seemingly everywhere, with their recognizable Street View Cars. Google tracks where you’ve been as well. If you log into Google Maps with the same account that is on your phone, then go here you can see everywhere you’ve been. This feature may be useful for parents wanting to make sure their teens are staying safe on Prom night or even to simply find out the name of the restaurant you went to three months ago with the amazing burritos. The Location History feature only works if you have the GPS locator active on your phone; but it works even if you are not using Google maps or have not used it that day. Google uses this to target ads toward you for using their free service. The easy way to stop Google following you around is to shut off your GPS locator on your phone when you are not using it. You can also delete your location history by going to the privacy settings in the Google Maps App or through your account on a computer (Google Help Page).
