88th Academy Awards and Film Club Trivia Night

2/26/2016

Ever wondered how the Oscars got its name? An Academy executive director Margaret Herrick noted that the statue for the Academy Awards ceremony looked like her uncle Oscar. About 40 million people are predicted to tune in this Sunday the 28th to watch the glorious ceremony commemorating their favorite actors and actresses on their achieving roles.

Morningside College has their own way of preparing for the Oscars. Film Club, a student/faculty group on campus who meets once a week to watch films and have discussion, put on their annual Film Club Trivia Night on Thursday February 18th in the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center. This event was hosted by student emcee Nick Misukanis. Four teams competed in the trivia night including the Men of Mass Comm, ISA, Pink Pandas, and Film Club Ubermensch. The different rounds included game show games such as Family Feud and Jeopardy, which included trivia questions about film, actors, actresses, and some Oscar related questions. In the end, it was the Men of Mass Comm who won the trivia night and the coveted Barnes and Noble gift cards.

Chris Rock is no Nick Misukanis, but he will be the host for the 2016 Oscars. For the Oscars this year the prominent categories of Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Leading Role have some big names running against each other. For Best Actor in a Leading Role, the nominees are Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender, and Eddie Redmayne. For Best Actress in a Leading Role, the nominees are Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlotte Rampling, and Saoirse Ronan. Many people are in suspense on whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio will win this year. DiCaprio has had four nominations for Best Actor and hasn’t won one yet. And despite the never-ending Internet memes and jokes about Leo’s tragic losses, sincerely we hope he wins, but if he doesn’t that just means another year of endless memes and jokes. In the end, you will just have to turn on the television and tune in to ABC at 8:30 p.m. Sunday February 28th to see who the winners of this year’s Oscars will be!
