About the Collegian Reporter
The Collegian Reporter is the student newspaper of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. It was first published as L’Echo on February 27, 1897. The name changed to the Collegian Reporter in 1898.
Over the years the Collegian Reporter has had a number of student writers who went on to become prominent in their fields. Its student writers have included former Iowa Governor W. L. Harding, sociologist Andrew Stouffer, novelist Josephine Herbst, Ebony editor Era Bell Thompson and Des Moines Register editor William Waymack. The Collegian Reporter’s most famous writers were Esther and Pauline Friedman, who later became known as the advice columnists Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren. The Friedman twins wrote a gossip column for the Collegian Reporter in the 1930’s called “The Campus Rat”. The Collegian Reporter has served the college well, documenting campus life and the issues facing the institution, as well as providing a means for expressing student opinions on everything from pop culture to important social issues.
About the Project
The Digitized Archive of the Collegian Reporter is part of a larger project to preserve and promote access to the Collegian Reporter by microfilming, digitizing and properly storing print originals. The Collegian Reporter Newspaper Project originated with a gift from a former editor of the Collegian Reporter, D. Kent Watkins ‘58. This project is supported in part by the State Historical Society of Iowa, Historical Resource Development Program and a gift from the Kent Watkins Fund.
